DUANE'S PHOTO TIPS
Auto Focus (AF) Lock

Auto Focus/AF Lock

Ever wonder why in some shots the leaves on the trees are in focus and great aunt Margaret and your mother are out of focus?

Auto Focus/AF is great but it can have a mind of its own. To help the camera understand what is to be in focus you can use your “Auto Focus/AF Lock”, most all cameras have them.
Shutter_Button_Half.jpgTo set the AF just press HALF the way down on the Shutter Button, green boxes should appear and what they are on will be in focus. If the green boxes are on what you want, keep the button half way pressed, compose the shot and press the shutter button all the way down, and the picture has been taken (and focused on what was important to you).
If the green box(s) are not on what you want in focus, lift your finger up and press HALF the way down on the shutter button again, usually, the AF points will change their position. If they are on what you want in focus compose the shot and press the button all the way down.
Most cameras have many different AF points that can be set, and some even will pick out faces and focus on them. Best to look up Auto Focus (AF) in your camera manual that way you know what types of AF points you have and how they are to work.
You gain an added benefit of using the AF Lock on your camera (especially on Point-n-Shoot cameras), you get a faster shot! The camera does not have to focus before the shutter opens. Try it and you will see. This is great for sport shots.
Happy In Focus Shooting!
