Tip #22: Get Sharper Photos

People ask me how to get sharper photos? First use a tripod, then hold your camera still and don’t move after the shot and learn your camera’s shutter lag time!

Probably the one best thing a person can do to get sharper photos is to use a tripod. It should be sturdy and handle the camera’s weight. Plus, a quick release is very handy (with the click of a button your camera is disconnected from the tripod). The tripod should extend to a height that allows you to comfortably view your camera’s viewing screen and/or eyepiece. Tripods come in all sizes, styles and weight ratings. It is best to personally test many tripods before you purchase one since they all are so different. Remember to get a tripod that is sturdy and is rated to handle your total attached weight (camera and lens). Also watch out for walking away from your tripod with your camera and lens attached, it is easy to get knocked or blown over. Be careful moving the tripod with the camera and lens attached, it is easy to bump your camera and/or lens and requiring a trip to the camera repair shop (I know from first hand experience) to repair the damage.

Next tip is to hold still for 1-2 seconds after the shutter button has been pressed down. Some digital cameras have what is called a “Shutter Lag”. This is a lag between when you press the shutter button and the time the entire photo has been electronically captured. Older and less expensive digital cameras will have a longer shutter lag then a newer DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) or a very high priced new Point and Shoot. A camera’s shutter lag should be one thing to consider when picking out a digital camera. If you plan on capturing people in action (your child playing baseball or soccer) spend the extra money to have as short of shutter lag as you can afford.

Some cameras have such a long shutter lag that you have to wait for a person to blink before you take the photo. That way you know they won’t have their eyes closed once your camera has captured your photo. If shooting more then one person, take three shots, and you can always look at the LCD and zoom in to see if everyone has open eyes. It takes some practice but after you know your camera’s shutter lag, you can compensate for it and sharper photos will appear.
